The Golden Pathway Virtual Book Tour Reaches the Homestretch

The Golden Pathway banner

It's hard to believe that The Golden Pathway virtual book tour coordinated by Pump Up Your Book Promotion reaches the homestretch. The adventure of introducing David and Jenkins to the literary world has been a wonderful opportunity to meet so many advid readers I may have never met otherwise. Even though this portion of the journey will end on October 29, I'm anxious to keep their story swirling through cyberspace and into classrooms, libraries, and bookstores. So don't forget to check back for updates on appearances both vritually and in person.

Thank you to one and all for your never ending support and please follow along on the last stops, for when one's journey ends, another adventure awaits.

Marketing with Video - Amazing Young Guitarist

I happened upon a YouTube video of an amazing little boy guitarist. While watching it, I noticed a music instructor was promoting his business with a bit of content at the bottom of the video.

In marketing, one of the best ways to sell a product or service is to SHOW what it can do for you. Well, this music instructor had the right idea in using  one of his students (I'm assuming) to demonstrate how a child could learn to play the guitar.

Granted, not all children or adults have the same capabilities or talents, but this is an excellent marketing tool. And, note that just listening to the audio wouldn't have the same affect. It's the video of this little boy with amazing talent that makes you want to run to the instructor's home and get lessons for you or your child.

So, without further ado, here is one outstanding little guitar player:

Sungha plays 'C*ome Toge*ther' arranged by Michael Chapdelaine

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I love listening to the guitar, violin, and cello.

Stories for Children Magazine Reopens Its Doors!

The exciting growth and changes continue to occur at Stories for Children Magazine and we are pleased to announce its reopening! This award-winning Ezine shut down for a short hiatus as their Founder, Owner and Editor-in-Chief VS Grenier gave birth to a wonderful baby girl.

“Being a mother takes a lot out of you, but now that my little girl is old enough to play in my office and my other kids are back in school . . . it’s time to reopen Stories for Children Magazine,” states VS Grenier. “I’ve really missed working with our great list of authors and illustrators. In addition, I am looking forward to working with the new SFC Team. We have a few of our old team members back, but we’ve added a lot of new faces as well.”

Stories for Children Magazine’s first issue is planned for April 2011. They are open to submissions and are looking for fiction, nonfiction, poems, crafts, activities, puzzles and youth submissions to fill their April, May and Summer 2011 issues. You can find their guidelines at http://storiesforchildrenmagazine.org under the contributors section.

Even though the relaunch issue is not until April 2011, you can still visit this fun, family friendly Ezine each month. “We’ll be posting book reviews, crafts, coloring pages and more for FREE each month,” states Grenier.

Stories for Children Magazine placed in the Top Ten for Best Magazine in Fiction, Nonfiction, and Poetry in the Preditors & Editors Readers Poll 2008. So come take an adventure in the World of Ink with Stories for Children Magazine – http://storiesforchildrenmagazine.org.

Special Poetry Chapbook/Holiday Card Offer

Little Known Poetry History: Chapbooks, a tradition in the poetry world since Elizabethan times, are named after the itinerant chapmen who travelled from village to village selling their goods.

My poetry partner Magdalena Ball and I figure there is no holiday greeting more meaningful than a poem—a real poem, not sing-songy impersonal verse from the shelves of card shops. With that in mind, we have created the Celebration Series of chapbooks and have released TaDa! Just in time for the holiday season! a chapbook titled Blooming Red: Christmas Poetry for the Rational.

Now, here’s the exciting part. Literature lovers everywhere can order these chapbooks with full-color covers by prize-winning water colorist Vicki Thomas for only $3. each. That’s only $75 for 25 of the most memorable holiday greetings you’ve ever sent to your friends and relatives. Each booklet is a card and gift in one.

Blooming Red includes Maggie’s science-inspired and Carolyn’s nostalgic poetry. It also includes some humorous poems for fair measure.

Here is one of the lighter-spirited ones from me:

Cruising Santa Clause©

After the season of pinescent
and candlewax, here is Santa

of the Seas, a ringer for the real guy.
Jolly round bearded face, sans a pipe

clenched tight in his teeth, wearing
his off-duty uniform, candy-cane-colored

running shoes, green gabardines, cranberry
worsted blazer, rhinestone-studded

lapel pin, and always with the Mrs, she as gray
as a Midwest winter day, beside his hollyberry

splendor. I peek discreetly. There walking
among Etruscan tombs, perched on remnants

of a Corinthian capitol at Ephesus
as if it were a stool, bright red and green

against the sand at Giza, wandering
through the ship’s casino, poking a placard

high to bid on a Kincaid canvas replica
(Ahhhh! The colored lights illuminating

the snow embellished by the master
himself). Best of all, night of nights! Santa

seated front row in the Stardust
Theater, other upfront guests volunteer

him to saw the gammy woman in red fringe
and sequins in half. He hesitates not a moment,

but went straight to his work.

The chapbooks in the Celebration Series include Cherished Pulse (for anyone you love), also with artwork from California artist Vicki Thomas (www.budurl.com/CherishedPulse); She Wore Emerald Then (for mothers on your gift list) with photographs by May Lattanzio (www.budurl.com/MotherChapbook); Imagining the Future: For Fathers and Other Masculine Apparitions (for the men in your life) (www.budurl.com/Imagining). And now Blooming Red for the special folks on your holiday list! (www.budurl.com/BloomingRed). All are available individually at only $6.95 on Amazon but are only $3. each when ordered in quantities of 25 or more directly from the poets. Put HOLIDAY ORDER in the subject line and send an e-mail to me at HoJoNews@aol.com . I will make payment arrangements with you and give you the small shipping cost for the number you order.

Magdalena Ball runs the highly respected CompulsiveReader.com review site. She is the author of the poetry book Repulsion Thrust, which was published to unanimous five-star reviews. Her novel Sleep Before Evening, was a Next Generation Indie Book Awards Finalist.

Carolyn Howard-Johnson's poetry appears frequently in review journals. She is listed in Poets & Writers and her chapbook of poetry, Tracings (http://budurl.com/CarolynsTracings), was given the Award of Excellence by the Military Writers Society of America and She Wore Emerald Then won its highest honor of gold. One of her poems recently won the Franklin Christoph Poetry Prize. She is also an award-winning novelist and short story writer and instructor for UCLA Extension Writers' Program.

For more information on any of the chapbooks in this poetry series, contact either of the authors or visit media rooms at www.howtodoitfrugally.com or www.magdalenaball.com. To learn more about artist Vicki Thomas and to see her work, go to www.vickithomasartist.com

Wishing you a lovely autumn and winter season,

Kathy Stemke is asking for your vote!

Kathy, a retired teacher who now writes children's books, has entered a picture book contest.

"I entered the contest late so I have to catch up to others who have over 1000 votes already. It's very difficult, but not impossible. 40% of my score is the number of votes. 60% of my score is the story, use of their illustrations, and grammar. (I had to eliminate some paragraph breaks and words to fit the story in the 4 small pages provided.) I just need to get in range of the high scorers to win!!   Thank you to those of you who have voted for me in the picture book contest recently."

"I'm moving up in the standings! "

"I truly appreciate your love and support."

If you're hearing about this for the first time, Kathy needs your help. You can vote once a day until November 22, 2010. If you put the link in your favorites, it would only take seconds each day. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Please vote, here's the link: http://naturemadesleep.net/stories/377

VBT Member, Teacher and Marketer Recommends Book on Marketing

I have a motto: "Reading one book on book promotion is never enough."
Thus, I recommend Michelle Dunn's Mosquito Marketing, a book full of book-marketing essentials. Here is the heartfelt recommendation I wrote to Michelle, complete with disclaimer:

Dear Michelle:

Congratulations on a job well done! In the writing. In the accumulation of knowledge. And in the production. I shall recommend Mosquito Marketing to my UCLA students and my clients--every single one of them!

Yes, you may use that as an endorsement, though you may not want to because I contributed to the book. Thus I may appear biased. The thing is, I would have said the same thing even if I had no part in it! (-:

So, it's going up on my Web site (the Resources for Writers section of www.howtodoitfrugally.com) right now! And into my recommendation list for my students. Soon. (-:

Thank you so much. Mosquito Marketing (ISBN 1453605304) will be a valued part of books I am part of--ones that I keep in a special reference (and brag!) library. Great work!

Best,
Carolyn Howard-Johnson
