Nurturing a Writer

Summer is winding down in Chicago.  Schools are beginning to welcome back their students.  Street festivals and concerts in the park are dwindling.  I’m gearing up for the numerous activities that kick into my life in the fall, but wait…what happened to summer vacation?  What happen to rest, relaxation and a little fun?  Somehow, I let life get in the way. Fortunately, it’s never too late for a little self-pampering.  While I’m at it, I’m going to nurture the writer in me.

Here’s what I’m putting on my list…

·         A day at the beach with a chair, sunscreen and a trashy novel
·         An evening talking with an old friend
·         A Sunday afternoon with a good book
·         An hour with a notebook to write nothing in particular and see what happens
·         Good coffee and chocolate
·         A picnic in the park with a jazz concert
·         A visit with the Jellies at the aquarium
·         Hmmm…I think I could go on and on.

I may have rushed through summer, but it’s never too late to rest, recharge and become inspired.  What about you?  Do you have some end of the season pampering for the writer in you?

Pampering is always good! I'm treating myself to significant blocks of writing time, come what may (and yes to the good coffee too!).

Oh, my gosh.Do I ever want pampering. And more time! Thanks for reminding us that we can handle this for ourselves.

Blocks of time...I'm adding that to my list.

Timely post Mary Jo. And what a soothing list. I have one week left before start of term and am now going to ignore the panic must-do feelings and make my own pamper-day hurrah.
Perhaps an interruption free Pilates hour--ten minutes would be good lol--a regular four small healthy salad meals--an hour with my new notebook, such lovely heavy creamy paper--and an hour playing with my new charcoal drawing box.
Wow, just the thought is making me feel so happy and excited rather than gloomy and depressed :-)
Thanks for the stimulus.

Sounds wonderful, Mary Jo. I'm crazy busy with moving and selling my home, but once it's done I will be taking time to just BBBBEEEEEE. :)

Although, last month I started doing meditation and listening to a vision statement. They really do work!

I agree wholeheartedly, it's important to nurture yourself, to "refill your well," even if it's to take a half-hour stroll in nature or to sit in your backyard and watch whatever wildlife you might have (or whatever renews you). I have to remind myself of that ever so often, because it's so important for creativity.

I might do something over the holiday weekend.

I love playing with charcoal. I haven't pulled out my box in a long time. I'm adding it to me list.

Even short meditation is useful. I do a three minute meditation each day and it really helps

I agree Heidi. It's really easy to get caught up in life and not take time to renew oneself.

If we aren't going to take of ourselves, how can we expect others to do it for us.

As Karen said, sometimes all you need is time to just BEEEE.

Mary Jo, I enjoyed reading your post. It was a good reminder for me to schedule spoiling myself here and there!

Thanks Mary Jo. We returned a day ago from three weeks away -- three out of eight in the last three months. I just need to get back into stride. But yesterday I spotted a special on a visit to the Addo Elephant Park quite close to us. I SOOO want to go. Now I've read this post I've decided I NEED to go! Thank you!
